Recording Guide
-
Do: Put laptop on a stack of books to get the webcam to eye level. Seat yourself comfortably and not too close to the camera - ideally your entire head and 1/2 of your chest area should be visible on screen.
Do not: Position webcam low so it’s looking up at your face or ceiling lights.
-
Do: Choose a background with minimal objects or light sources.
Do not: Have a window, lights, or lots of clutter behind you.
-
Do: Place a lamp behind and to the side of your laptop so light is shining on your face. Your face should be fully illuminated but not overexposed.
Do not: Have a lamp or window behind you or too close to your face; avoid shadows so only part of your face is illuminated.
-
I recommend using and external microphone (e.g., Bluetooth headphones, USB microphone). And recording in an area with limited ambient, echo, or background noise, allowing you to speak at a normal volume and tone.
If you’re using a desktop mic, place it as close as possible without being in shot.
If you’re using a clip-on mic, attach it to your collar or lapel at chest level to avoid interference from your hair.
If you’re using your laptop or desktop mic, test it first to ensure that the sound is clear and not echoing.
-
If you plan to wear glasses, be aware that light sometimes causes distracting reflections or glare. Be sure to test the video before recording to ensure your glasses aren’t creating a distracting reflection or glare.
-
Please remember to silence your cell phone and other devices

The Be Helpful Podcast uses Riverside for podcast recordings. Before you start, here are some tips for a seamless recording experience with Riverside:
1. Use a computer with a Chrome browser that’s up-to-date.
2. Check your internet stability. Ethernet cable connections are preferred over Wi-Fi.
3. Use an external mic, if possible. Even the mic in your ear/headphones are better than nothing.
4. Use headphones/earphones to prevent echo and increase audio quality.
5. Close all other applications that don’t need to be open during the recording. This prevents CPU overload. Important: Please close all other programs that try to use your mic/camera.
